Welcome to the new 2023-2024 recorded rounds WorldSwing Tour! Enjoy 62 weeks of glorious GBC action...

The overall goal here is to take a trip around the world and get a chance to highlight and applaud fantastic Jack Nicklaus golf courses and their designers, many of which need to get their time in the sun. The schedule is not exhaustive and many very deserving top tier golf courses are not included on this particular tour. Hopefully I'll get to them on the next one! Also, please note that for the most part, I'm not repeating courses played on the PGA Tarheel tour, except as noted on 'signature PGA events'

I will be playing my rounds and posting them for you to download and play along with so that you don’t feel alone. Please feel free to post your own rounds in the threads because I would love to watch you play too, and this is not meant to be a monologue.

Typically, each week will feature two courses, each of which will be played twice in ‘real world’ conditions. We will be playing courses in a geographic progression, with each week’s courses being in the same region of the world, and sometimes several weeks in a row in the same region. The next region will be connected in sequence to the previous (as we meander around the globe). I am trying to play in regions such that we wander the globe in pleasant times of year for that region. Breaks in the sequence will feature courses from one designer.

I will try to play rounds 1 and 2 early in the week, and rounds 3 and 4 later during the week.

Major PGA events will be squeezed in from time to time, as a bonus one rounder, played on Sundays. In addition, a few special days will be celebrated with a thematic course.

You will find "Tarheel's handicap" listed with each week, and this is basically my current handicap calculated based on the last twenty rounds of tour play between this and the PGA Tarheel tour. The calculation is average par last 20 rounds minus my average score last 20 rounds then multiplied by .80. To use this handicap, keep up with your own scores, and then use your number and mine to play against my rounds using these handicaps.

Welcome to the WorldSwing world tour! This is the first week of a proposed sixty week journey around the world which will start here and eventually end in the heart of Africa.

Where are we?
Currently "An island somewhere in the N. Atlantic"


Remember, as per the instructions in the first post, you can play handicap golf when playing against my rounds, if you calculate your own handicap, or best estimate. In my case, this event is 8, so you would add 8 strokes to my score.

We are opening from 'somewhere in the North Atlantic' and I like to think we are somewhere near Novia Scotia but could be closer to the British Isles or Iceland, but we'll just go with the former. Jay Johnson brought us Alister's Rock in July of 2001, a fictional links style course. It is listed at about 6754 yards, but actually plays quite a bit longer in fiercer wind conditions and due to tricky lies on the fairways. Out of bound areas also create a challenge. Finding the green in approach often rewards with a good chance to putt the bird.

We will play two rounds here before taking a boat or plane to our next golf course in this region.

As usual, I will be finding the current real world conditions local to the course to create the playing conditions at the time I play my round. So, opening up here, its raining and windy as hell. Suffer with me!

Hi Brad,

here's my round. The hole was my worst enemy, including the dreaded cellophane bridge. I just couldn't get them to drop for me. Add to that one of those lovely bunker shots where you can only hit it half way to the hole and what was a close event, became an easy win for you. (I think I may have forgotten the 20% fog as well.)

Thanks for uploading your round! You and I take very similar approaches to these holes. You had about 6 chips or putts that teased you rudely. You could have been 11 or 12 under with another half inch of roll or break. I enjoyed this golf course, and I think the strong winds added to the enjoyment. This course is short enough that the wind didn't seem to make it as frustrating as it can on some other courses.

Yeah, nice course. But you would expect nothing less from the master of links golf courses, Jay Johnson. I loved the challenge of the greens, despite my inability to sink putts.

Where are we?
Currently we are on Cape Breton Island, Novia Scotia


The start of WorldSwing 2023 can be summed up with the word pain.

First we have strong winds and rain over at Alister's Rock, and this week the extremely difficult challenge of Cape Breton Island, a very very long golf course created by Daniel Higgins III in 2015. The length in fact forced me to choose Blue tees this week, breaking my tradition. In this case, Blue would seem a standard challenge for distance, but that is little consolation because you will most certainly find almost every lie you get after the tee box to be on a sidehill with a long iron. IF you can find the green without bouncing off into a hazard, you may have a chance on your putt.

Beautiful golf course to look at, and quite artistic. Its a lovely place to take a beating! 8259 yards and par 72 from the black tee, 7494 from the blue.

Where are we?
Currently we are in Siglufjörður, Iceland


Leaving Novia Scotia area, we hop a flight over to Siglufjörður, Iceland for our next adventure this week. We have tee times at a pair courses from Olaf Blanke. The first of these from 2006 is Gjulbrandars, a course in northern Iceland and built on the grounds near an old monastery, ruins of which are nearby. The course boasts 67 sand traps, and you will be getting dirty. Fairways are often challenging, with narrow landing areas and traps all over the place. Extreme slopes are abundant and often feed to the traps, so plan very very carefully. Good luck!

By the way, we are back to the black tees this week.

Hole 9, par 4, with ruins just visible to the left. Note the very small landing zone from tee.


Par 4 number 4, with a tree right in the middle of the fairway. You need to swing the ball in from the side to avoid it for a easy short iron in.


Hole 17, par 4. My advice is stay the heck out of this trap! I did not. The worst mistake is to roll the ball off the green into it because you can’t chip up the steep incline should ball stop in trap close to Hill.

WorldSwing Week 2

Siglufjordur

Where are we?
Currently we are in Siglufjörður, Iceland


Olaf Blanke, designer of both courses this week, seemed to have a mean streak in him making these Icelandic golf adventures. Siglufjordur might cost you a club and a sleeve of balls. Its pretty hard to find a place to drop the tee shot on a fairway where you have a direct path to the green, unobstructed by trees or other hinderances. You pretty much always can choose to tee off into a trap for a clear shot if that suits you, and there are 82 of them to pick from. The course is 6950 yards and is designed around a local volcano, which you will clearly get a view of on the back nine. This course, and to a lesser extent the first course this week, are not quite like anything we have played on the PGA Tarheel course last season (well, except maybe the vacation club round at Meteora Monastery in Greece). Take the few birds offered, and mostly just be happy with your par. Suggested by the author are heavy fogs, so I tossed that in.

And by the way, both the courses in week 2 are fictional golf courses.

Where are we?
Currently we are at the island of Tjörn, Sweden


Week 3 of the our tour requires another skip across the oceans, this time to Sweden. Unfortunately, the weather has followed us and at least for the first day the wind is howling and the rain is falling, but that might be what you expect from being in Scandanavia.

Our first course was designed by the talented Göran Mentzer and is a 7132 yards, par 71 challenge called Svartedalen Golf Klub. Its found on an island along the west coast of Sweden proper called Tjörn. This is an area that Göran says has many characteristics in common with the heathlands of England and has sandy soils and pine trees. Normally, the winds are blowing, but often the ground is firm (though not for us at least for round 1!). You should see wind turbines and farmland as you play along, and the wide open fairways are a great relief from our trip to Iceland. Very well crafted design.

Falsterbo Peninsula Golfklubb

Where are we?
Currently we are on Falsterbo Peninsula, southern Sweden, Baltic Sea


A commuter flight south about 184 miles takes us towards continental Europe as we continue play in Sweden. Today, welcome to Falsterbo Peninsula Golfklubb, a gorgeous design from Mike New, Lars Sandstrom and Göran Mentzer released in October 2007. You will play 6646 yards from the black tees, working against par 72. Though a fictional course, it was inspired by a real course in the area, however the designers took it further, hoping to reach a new ideal and following this principal:

"Golf is an adventure. An adventure in mind and spirit"

Though rain continues to plague our golfing adventures, I still found this course wonderful and visually very appealing. Its a true links style design, with beautiful seaside sights and sounds. Two rounds here is not nearly enough...

As an aside, check out Mike New’s Crash Point West, a classic.
Mr. Mentzer, who also designed our last course, has a certain signature look on his golf courses…if you played with me on the PGA tour last season, we played his Kiawah Dunes course. This art style is much to my liking.
