Scoring a 63 on the front nine didn't exactly put Lawrence Knowles in a good frame of mind when he toured the Agawam Hunt in East Providence, Rhode Island, one afternoon. But Lawrence was not about to call it a day. He knew he was likely to improve on the back nine. And improve he did, coming in with 36. The 27 - stroke difference is the largest margin of improvement for any golfer breaking 100 in a single round.

Chicago professional Jimmy Hines was named to three U. S. Ryder Cup teams, but never played a match. Hines was unfortunate enough to be named to teams in 1939, 1941 and 1943, when the matches were canceled because of World War II.

John Brodie, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers from 1957 to 1973 and NFL Most Valuable Player in 1970, declared himself a golf professional in 1960. In 1990 as a member of the Senior PGA Tour, Brodie won a tour event in Los Angeles.
