Ben Hogan was at best a moderately good putter and eventually a poor one. At one point in the middle of his competitive career, Hogan was going through a particularly bad stretch of putting and was complaining regularly about it to his wife, reiterating that he couldn't make a thing from outside twenty feet. At that, Valerie told her husband, " Then hit the ball closer to the hole."

I tried real hard to play golf, and I was so bad at it they would have to check me for ticks at the end of the round because I'd spent about half the day in the woods.
