Golf course architect Pete Dye was once asked what constituted a "great" golf course. His response cut to the heart of so-called greatness and it reflected a touch of cynicism. " A great championship course," said Dye, " has the Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Pacific Ocean on the other and Arnold Palmer winning a tournament on it."

The Spectacular success of the Senior PGA Tour can be seen in its money leaders. In 1980, Don January won just $44,100 in the tours first year. In 1990, Lee Trevino became the first senior to win $1 million in a single seasonon the tour. In 2002, when it became the Champions Tour, Hale Irwin surpassed $3 million.

The first golf balls were made of wood. The next were leather balls filled with goose feathers, followed by rubber balls, gutta-percha balls and then modern wound balls.
