jnse today

Post by tarheel »

I sort of have a hankering to try JNSE for the first time in about 25+ years. How does it run on a modern computer and is it hard to setup?

Does it require use of spacebar to hit the marks, or is it adaptable to other keys/mouse? I don’t really like anything hammering repeatedly on spacebar.

I feel I'm the most active JNSE player in this forum so I am here for you tarheel! :)

I'm currently playing JNSE on my laptop that I've had for six and half years and currently running Windows 10 (plan to upgrade to 11 soon now that I've used it enough at work and am comfortable with it). Since I still have my original CD for JNSE I downloaded that to my computer and then downloaded a program called DOSBox from the Internet. I had to learn a few commands but in general it's easy to use. The nice thing with DOSBox is I can increase the CPUs so that the redraws load quickly. I have had no issues with the running of JNSE.

The top post in the General Discussion in the General Discussion forum also has a link to download JNSE that supposedly will avoid the DOSBox commands. I have not tried it as my setup is good.

I wasn't sure about your other answer as I use the spacebar to hit the marks. However, since I do use my laptop mouse for maneuvering with the menus, I thought I would try some test playing to see if I could use the mouse. If I left clicked on the mouse on the power bar, it would start the rise to click the percentage of power. Once I clicked that the power bar would go back for you to hit the mark for accuracy.

With hours and hours of searching, I've found various websites that still have JNSE courses on them. They are mostly from the early to mid 90s...JNSEs early days.

Since Sundance mentioned the Prodigy tour, it still exists today as Play with the Pros (PwP) Tour...although it is just currently three of us playing each week. This site is hosting it and here is the address: https://www.golfsimclubhouse.com/jack/jnse/pwp-tour/ There are a few courses out there right now Waialae, PGA West Palmer Course (apparently no one did a good JNSE rendition of the Stadium course) and Torrey Pines (on the Previous, current and Next pages). The gentleman that runs this, Fred, has made more recent updates to the latter two and did an update of Waialae in 2004 to fix some things from original designs. Fred has a large catalog of courses and we were supposed to have a space to download them all here as Fred starting working on it before all of you playing JN6 came to this forum but I don't know where he's at with it.

I think that covers everything at the moment; feel free to PM me if you have questions and don't want to go back and forth within this thread.

Because you can't directly run the program and have to use an emulator, it does sound like a chore reading this. It does take a little bit of learning, but to me is not difficult to master.

To run JNSE through DOSBox, I have to "mount" my folder where I have JNSE to a new drive. Mine is saved in the directory C:\PCGames\JNSE. I have to write a command to mount this folder in a new drive - let's say the E: drive. The command is mount e c:\pcgames\jnse. I then have to change the drive to E: by typing e:. The file to run JNSE is golf.exe so I just have to type golf.

I wish I could share a screen shot of the above to see how simple this is. I don't know how to do this in the forum. I also wrote a post in the Technical Help forum which explains this and increasing the CPUs to make the game run faster (it starts at 3000 cycles - I increase it to about 9500 cycles).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Very nice courses ...Ben Wicks has also designed JNSE courses ,but most of the downloadlinks are broken ..https://web.archive.org/web/20010331050 ... depot.com/ .I don't know where to find these courses .But some of them are really nice like Pete Broad , KF Baker, Bob Polin, Ben Wicks , Chris Fergurson.

Bob Polin is an old friend whom I lost track of years ago. His course's were fantastic and very tough. The only name I don't recognize is Ben Wicks but that's a list of great designers!!

I still have about 200 JNSE courses (currently uncompressed) as well as some of the utilities that were used for the designer portion. If I can help out with that, let me know.

I have to dig trough my USB thumb drives because that's where I have them stored on. I believe I have courses from around 60 designers by last name. Besides the designers listed I have courses by Sundance, Gene Rodriguez III, Mark Willett, Jay Johnson amongst others.
