Old Timers Competition

Round 4 here, played with Maestro Brad, who inspired this old clicker.
Since I didnt see a consensus here, I did not use ANY available Gimmes.

I will announce our next course by the end of the day Friday.

I thought Albermarle was a brilliant course that demanded some careful selection of clubs on several holes. Also, graphically, it was very pleasing to play multiple times. Its going on my "A" list of courses in the future.

I agree, Brad, a very nice course which requires thought before almost every shot; danger lurking in many spots. After my first round, I found myself hitting normal drives instead of power drives several times during my rounds to make sure I did not put the ball in a hazard; was not entirely successful. Course management is the key to scoring on this course. Putting is pretty easy...not that I am complaining.

Nice variation in the hole layouts with good elevation changes. I didn't get bored with it.

I have never used gimmes but, if others want to use them, I have no objection.

Glad you liked the course boys. I am certainly going to continue to try and find little gems like Albermarle for us to play when it is my turn to select.

I messed up #17, a couple lip out putts doomed me.
Dropped one in the water on a par 5, don't remember which one. Came out with a par

Same here charlie, I haven't went to my low & full drives yet, mostly normal drives.
Still looking for the feel lol

Hi Guys,

well, we are actually finished our first tournament and it was very close. Brad (Tarheel) had an unbelievable 55 in the final round (with 17 red scores) to really stir things up.

Charlie and Randy are obviously still trying to get their old swings back, but with the handicap system, were still well in the event. In fact, it was so close, I had to go to decimal points to separate the winners of two categories.

Thanks for playing fellas. If we can play our rounds in order (1 - 4) I will be able to post progress scores after each round.

I think we are all happy to play "no gimmies", just like in the real game.

Just got to wait to see where our next tourney will be and then I can work out some conditions.

A ton of great courses are available, and I could have easily chosen a well known top tier course to be safe, but I'm going to take a chance with a course I think is a bit underrated. Nice open fairways, and I don't _think_ the greens are overly complicated. Water isn't in play a lot, but there are hazards out there waiting. Visually, not a lot of custom additions and bells and whistles, but I think the design is very solid and its very soothing to my eyes to look at. Also, it has history going back to JN4. And, hey, its got Skeleton corner in October ! What do you all think about four rounds at:

OK guy's I just have to ask, how can you play round 3 or 4 before round 1 or 2? I'm confused. Also, just curious how your HDCP system works when you all shoot way under par.

I can answer the first part:

The conditions were provided for all four rounds at the outset of the event, so people could play any order they wanted HOWEVER, I think the idea is to play in order and post .round files so we can play with each other. Originally we were going to take turns who posted .round first, but just went more with a post as you do it. I played mine in order, and played two of my rounds with other players .round files. I played an additional round with someone only to find out we both had used incorrect conditions, so had to play that one again solo. I played one of my rounds solo and posted it so others could play with it.

Hi Steve,

the handicap system took me quite a while to work out. I tried to use a handicap calculator, but that gave us all negative handicaps, which didn't work, as the better you scored the better your handicap got. In the end, I decided that, for the purposes of the handicap, all courses would have a par of 54. So, your score of 62 would get you a handicap of around 8 (see comment in bold). The handicap is then adjusted using the normal handicap system of the last 20 game scores (although we have only played 8 to date), multiplied by 0.93. Your handicap is then added to your stroke score to give you your handicap score. For Stableford, you would get one shot on each of the 8 hardest holes. Add in a heap of Excel formulas and there you have it. Simple!

PS: Charlie has indicated to me that the handicap system is counter-intuitive and thinking about it more, I think he is right. I think it may be a simple fix (ie. take the calculated handicap away from 18 and use that outcome as your handicap) but I have been wrong in the past. I am going to tinker with the data and see if that fixes the issue. I'll keep you informed as to how I go.

I'll probably play tomorrow night or the next day. Things are getting busy next few days as we will be driving out Saturday morning to eastern TN to meet my daughter for fall break for afew days, who is driving from Nashville where she is in college.
