Bronkhorstspruit Gholfklub

Where are we?
Pretoria, South Africa

We are continuing our time in South Africa, where it is 84 degrees in the afternoon. Bronkhorstspruit Gholfklub represents a real course near Pretoria though Dawie Buitendach chose to increase the difficulty by lengthening the black and white tees. I think this course is just marvelous and its a shame he only gave us 6 or so courses. You will have long approaches into fairly difficult greens, and even par 3's are going to be a wood from the black tee. This course was made for release in May 2003. Par 72 and 7707 yards and it really has a real world look.

Spes Bona Boereklub

Where are we?
Cape Town, South Africa
Image

Mr Buitendach graced us with our next stop in South Africa, and much like last week, this course should visually appeal to you. This one takes us to the table mountain area of Cape Town and views of the ocean at the tip of Africa. This is a windy place, and the seas nearby can be dangerous for boats. So it might be for your golf ball as well, which may find the bottom of a waterway, or errr off course into an unplayable mess. Spes Bona Boereklub is par 72, 7140 yards from the black tees, and was his 3rd release from Feb 2003. I grieve that we didn't get more courses than a handful from Dawie, because imagine what another twenty years of practice would have created with this start!

We'll enjoy one more of his later this week, but for now, suffer the wind with me.

Mooiplaats Boereklub

Where are we?
Pretoria, South Africa

The wind has blown us far from the beaches and back inland to Mooiplaats Boereklub. We come back to Pretoria where we play our third course from Mr. Buitendach, and our final course in South Africa. This course really couldn't feel more different than the last two. Mostly because the wind has really calmed down. But we are greeted with a friendly, rather short feeling course. This is a parkland, 7100 yard, par 72 course where you should score really low. Enjoy the round 1 break and try to get yourself a record. Our designer really has a knack for fun course creation, and I will emphasize again how much I wish he had given us more. In this case, he shows that he can create an easy course after giving us a course to pull your hair out over. This course was released in December 2002.

After two rounds here, we move across the ocean to the Americas.

La Paz

Where are we?
Baja Peninsula, Mexico
Image

A very modern course awaits us in the Baja Peninsula after a really long trip from South Africa. This one was released in May of 2022 by Richard Sugarman who was also credited with The Portage GC back in 2001! These are his only two that I know of immediately, and please let me know if I've missed some others.

La Paz is a really nice course and a great challenge, with length from the tee and OOB if you venture into the desert. I would call it a sand belt course, with the biggest challenge coming from your lies on the fairway and green. Nice variety of needed strategy from the tees, some of which you can let it really rip and others where you are going to want to be more precise.

We will be adventuring here in South and Central America a few weeks, so enjoy!

I had the privilege of play-testing this course for Rick. He put a lot of thought and effort into this design and I think it really shows in this fine layout.

Cenotes de los Mayas

Where are we?
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Image

We head ESE from Baja to the Caribbean side of Mexico to golf at a David Lewis masterpiece of a course, honoring his trip with his wife to explore the Yucatan peninsula and learn about the cenotes of the area history. This was around the turn of the century and his opening dialogue is worth reading. Cenotes de los Mayas is 6727 yards and par 72 and has really great eye candy for your 18 holes.
. The release was January 2001.

David has credit to a couple of JNSE courses and sadly only three other courses for JN5/6 (which I might add are fantastic). On the PGA/WS tour last year, I visited Valley of the Kings, and I just may need to find my way back after today's reminder of his talent.

Here are more courses to look at:

WorldSwing Week 17
Special Event: Merry Christmas!
A Mountain Christmas 2002

Merry Christmas! For anyone having a chance to take a mental break from the excitement, joyously screaming children or grandchildren, duty in the kitchen, or football I bring you a round at A Mountain Christmas 2002 by Rod and Pat Christy. This pair gave us many interesting courses including Bikini Isle, Eagle Lake Golf Resort, Middle Earth Golf Club, Montezuma's Revenge, Moose Head Bay and Pine Mountain Valley Yacht & GC. This one is from 2002 and is 7077 yards, par 72. Immersive is the word. You will get a full-on holiday experience, with classic music, snowmen, Santa, snowmobiles, and so on...all mixed with snow and Christmas trees. The variety of sound effects is fun, and you come into the 18th green with a true celebration.

I will warn you that you want to get real close to the pin, because the snowy mix makes it really close to impossible to read the greens at distance. Which is one reason I chose conditions to be easy...we don't want to make a holiday frustrating!

To Rod & Pat Christy: Thank you for this and your other courses, and I can't help but wonder what your large family is up to now and how many grandchildren the count is up to!

With these tough reads, go ahead and unwrap a couple of Mulligans this round :)

Thank you for reading it! I'm glad to know when people pay attention to it. I'm hoping it also gives people a chance to try some courses they've never played before or at least pays tribute to hard work from the past :)
