During the evening before the final round of the 1983 Buick Open, Japanese professional Isao Aoki decided to have Chinese food for dinner. When he finished the meal, he opened his fortune cookie which had a message that read, "You will take a trip to the desert." Sure enough , the next day Isao twice hit bunkers that resulted in bogeys and he lost the tournament by one stroke.

Golfers playing golf in the Arizona desert often carry a beat-up old 5-iron to hit the balls out of the desert rocks.

In 1998, Ocean Trails Golf Course near Los Angeles closed before it could open when a broken water pipe under the course softened the ground, causing most of the 18th hole to slide down a cliff toward the Pacific Ocean. The course opened with 17 holes.
