A New Opfer Design?

Post by seopfer »

Steve Opfer here: I was over looking at The Golf Club on Steam, then went into the forums and saw a post looking for old PGA 2000 designers. It reminded me of all the fun I had, so I loaded it up, downloaded all my old courses (Thank God for Golf Sim Clubhouse) and played them (Maes Glen, my last one, being my personal fave). I forgot how much fun PGA 2000 is!! ...AND how beautiful it looks. Here we are 15 years later and this little champ still delivers: great swing and ball physics, no lag/glitch/Windows/resolution problem. I played all night long!

Needless to say, I've got the bug back, but before I start designing again, what are some of the most beautiful and realistic courses to play and what are the MUST HAVE libraries? I LOVED Arrowhead Golf Club by Wagers...some of the best textures I've seen. And, of course, I have all of the Ken McHale and Brian Silvernail courses.

What would you like to see in a new design of mine?

Steve! WOW, never thought I'd see a post from an old time great designer. Love Mae's Glen and Joshua Ridge. Won my only tournament at Franklin Lakes this season,it's also very good. Don't know when you stopped designing so I'll just say Woodford Park is a classic library. Others I use and like are thelegacy, bethpage1, blackheath, chiltonhills, coosbay, cypress, oceanside, and any of the wild libraries. Any course you choose to make I'm sure will be excellent. Glad to here you have that ITCH again. Most any of the newer courses over the past 6 years or so should be checked out. Here is my short list of current favorite course's

MY CURRENT TOP COURSE’S LIST

#1 Coastal Links at Edisto Island (9.9 A+)
#2 Arcaida Bluffs (9.9 A+)
#3 North American Woods (9.9 A+)
#4 Point Reyes National (9.85 A+)
#5 Mill Creek G.C. (9.85 A+)
#6 Stone Pony (9.85 A+)
#7 The Lakes Course at Pine Ridge (9.85 A+)
#8 Glen Haven (9.8 A)
#9 Blackwolf Run River Crs. (9.8 A)
#10 Coo’s Bay (9.8 A)
#11 Stormbay (9.8 A)
#12 Horseshoe Hills (9.8 A)
#13 European Links (9.8 A)
#14 The Trenche at Monticello (9.8 A)

Welcome Steve, great to have you back. I agree that you can't go wrong with most of the new stuff, pretty much everything produced now is high quality. I think Arrowhead is still the standard for visual beauty as well. I'd certainly download all of Wagers courses if you haven't already. Also you might want to check out Abernathy Estate, Links Legend took the architect file included with the game for Abernathy Park and updated it/put his own touches on it. Check out the design thread for hit here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=655

Thanks for the tips! Is it possible to search the course database by designer name? What would be the easiest way to find Wagers' other courses without going through the list page by page (which I'll probably do anyway)? ;)

Steve! In the PGA 2000 utilities section (seen at the top of this forum page) is a section called PGA 2000 Listings. You'll find at the bottom of that small listing "PGA 2000 course's by designer" that can be downloaded.

Good to see you again Steve, I think you would recognise my nickname from back in the PGA and Jack Nicklaus days. You're playing the wrong game Steve..lol

In another section of this board some of us old timers including Brian Zager play World Golf Challenge 2011 and have for many, many years. There is just a small group of us that play the game but we have been playing online every friday night for the past 5 years I think..lol EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT!

We all get on Mumble server and talk and drink and have a good old time..lol (some of us drink anyways) :D

Here is a list of the people that play golf and I bet you know almost everyone of them...

SmokinJo - Joe Habiger
DesertRat - BJ Weworski
Zona - Jeff Helton
Nails - Brian Silvernail
BrianZ111 - Brian Zager
Steve Dunut - Steven Faupel
Sam Appleton

I do think a few of us have PGA2000 installed yet but man that game is tough as nails if you haven't play it for awhile..lol, I'm not a 2D fan either anymore really, I do miss the announcing though.

Good to hear from you Joe! Does World Golf Challenge have a designer? Looks like it's just online play of their courses. Friday nights would've been great some time ago, but my wife no longer has to work nights, so Friday nights have become "special" again. ;)

Yes WGC has a designer. A lot of the courses have been designed by the guys Joe listed from our Friday night group. If you want to check it out I can send you a code for free to download it.

Hi Steve!! I don't know if you remember me from back in the Copyright Club days, but I was there. Love Mae's Glen! A lot of great courses are named in the "Course Reviews" forum under the thread "Top Courses and More'" which is about the 5th one down.

Here are some of my favorite over the last few years that may not have been mentioned yet:

Elysium Fields - Polslad
Royal Birkdale 2015 - Polslad
Sierra Country Club - David Caygle
Katke-Cousins V2 - Adam Brandt
Dogwood Trail (2 editions) - Bryce
Castle Stewart - Polslad
Peninsula State Park - BrianZ
Flindlers Ridge - Craig Johnson
Crescent Hills - Bryce
Cade's Cove - Robert@
The Cliffs at Stone Forest - Grayson/Wagers
Links Course at Hatteras Island - Terry Grayson
Alkimos Golf Links - Craig Johnson
Mamacs Retreat - Duncan McMonagle (aka LinksLegend)
Glen Haven - Adam Brandt
Blake Valley - Craig Johnson

The Glen Haven libraries created by Adam Brandt, are by far the best blends in the game

I hope I'm not the one to break the news to you that we lost Wagers to cancer in May of 2012.
