Online play via ip

Post by Goran »

I remember playing online, but I think it was through a 3rd party lobby that hosted lots of games that probably don´t exist anymore.
But I noticed the game has a builtin direct online option as well. If you know the other players ip-number would that work?
The reason I am asking is my brother, who used to play JN, would like to install it if we can play online. He has very limited IT skills, so I must know if it is worth the trip and set it up for him.

Hi Goran, it's been a long time since the Gamespy days where we met in a lobby to launch games.

For todays games or older games steam might be an option.

Check here to see if you can setup Per to Per sessions.

Let us know how it comes out.

So you think there is a chance with non-steam games like JN6 also? Will check it out, thanks!

EDIT peer-to-peer looks very promising for the cause, as it has been used since the early counterstrike days. I am a bit worried I will get my second stroke assisting him tho, we successfully installed JN6 in just less than 2 hours by phone and the concept of rightclicking files and copy them instead of moving etc was totally new to him :)

Hi Goran,

I would think it is possible considering your sharing a connection rather it be from Steam or any other port sharing program.
The trick is to figure out what all that info means in the link :-) lol

Maybe one of our members with more knowledge than me can figure it out :golf: :bg:

Only got it to work with two computers in the same home network.
Tried DirectPlay with no success.
My brother and I downloaded GameRanger and it might work, but it required us to change port settings and some other things within in our routers. We did not go through with it, bc of fear of ruin security and basically uncertainty of knowing what we were doing.

I sure wish i could play with others online too but I would be reluctant to mess around with my router.

This is why I post my pga tour files though, so at least it feels like you are playing with somebody else live. It’s also the purpose of our old timers thread.

I do miss the in play chat but at least it’s something we still have left

We could use the gameranger to see each other and then, try to connect like in the old days: connection by ip... we used to do that when the gamespy failed... my user in gameranger is JuanMenestrina
