When Gary Player first went to the Open in 1955 at the Old Course at St, Andrews, he couldn't afford a hotel. The future three-time Open winner slept in the bunkers of the course near the sea.

Modern golf really became popular in the 1950s because President Eisenhower loved the game, and because tournaments on TV showed the world a golfer named Arnold Palmer.
