Contest Course Judging

Post by tincup »

The 2010-2011 course design contest is wrapping up. Shortly, we will be releasing the courses on the GolfSimClubhouse site and course judging will begin. When released, the courses will appear at the top of the most recent releases list on the courses page.

There are 5 courses submitted for the contest...
Contest Course .....Designer
1 Alkimos Golf Links .....Craig Johnson
2 Glen Haven .....Adam Brandt
3 Gunpowder Bay .....Bryce
4 Mamacs Retreat Golf Club .....Duncan McMonagle (Links Legend)
5 Point Reyes National .....Steve Horn

Judging and voting
-Everyone is eligible to judge and vote on the courses
-Judging will be open until the end of January, 2011
-You can judge as many as you like... 1,2,3,4 or all 5
-For each course you judge, you need to provide a score between 1 and 1000
-email me your score(s) ... dbrown4428@aol.com or send me a private message on this site... your choice
-I will collect all scores and record them in a spreadsheet
-At the end, I will average all scores for each course.
-The highest average score will win the contest.

Judging Criteria
-After much discussion, it was decided that each person will use their own criteria for arriving at a score for a course. Everyone does it differently so use what you are most comfortable with.

-As a guideline, I suggested in the forum that the following categories should be given some thought while arriving at a score:
1 ____________ Greens:
2 ____________ Fairways
3 ____________ Elevations
4 ____________ Bunkers
5 ____________ Objects
6 ____________ Water
7 ____________ Appearance&Layout
8 ____________ Realism
9 ____________ Design Balance
10 ____________ Playing enjoyment

But again, there is no requirement that you use the above list of criteria... it is just for reference.

Have fun...

I've decided to use your list Dar, except for 'designing balance', simply because I don't know what it means  I have a miscellaneous category which includes the little things, that will in turn take away points. It's more of an 'X' factor than anything. Anyways, I feel the only fair way to judge the courses is to play them all, under the same exact conditions, then rate them against each other. If you only play one, then you don't really have to worry about it. If you play all 4, and only want to rate one or two of them, you will have something to base your scores against. I have already played 1 round at each course and am working on scoring now.

Since I have seen the other designers work, it makes me feel bad! Seeing these courses helps me to realise what I did wrong with mine. However, it's a neat feeling to be on someone else's hole and know exactly what I put there on the plot.

I just want to say that Adam, Craig, Duncan and Steve that you all did a great job, and I have absolutely no problem if I come in last place to these courses!

I will give all ocurses a couple of rounds before putting any votes in. Well done guys on the courses that have been completed and uploaded. Really good work in there, and 5 completely different looking courses from the same plot.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Doron,

On the expanded list I posted the other day, there was some detail on what went into the "design balance" category. It included these items:

Does this course have good variety of length?
Does this course have a good mix of Doglegs and straight holes?
Is there at least one drivable par 4?
Uphill and downhill holes?
Is it free of holes that penalize drives of 250-260?
Are the tee boxes constructed properly (ample size, flat)?
Are the tee boxes free of obstructions?
Do the tee boxes allow the player to point at the target?
Are most par threes under 200 yards?
Are par 5's reachable in two?

Voting Status

Votes for the courses are trickling in. I have votes from 11 people so far. However, not everyone has voted on all courses yet.

There is still plenty of time, but don't forget to vote.

I must admit, I had a very difficult time voting on the 5 contest courses.
All 5 designers must be commended for their entries.
Thank you for these additions to our course list.

Time marches on... In a week, I will be announcing the results of the voting for the contest courses. I have votes from 13 people so far, including votes from four of the five contest course designers. If you have not voted yet, you might be giving that some thought.

Feedback needed
How would you like me to present the final results? We have several options:
-Just announce the winning course and designer along with the overall number of votes and score average.
-Announce the winner with all voting detail presented, including voter names.
-Announce the winner with all voting detail presented, but NO voter names.
-Announce the winner with only number of votes and summary averages for all courses presented.

I can also provide a breakdown of two groups:
Players-only who voted
Player-designers who voted

I can do it any way you like. Just let me know

Whatever you do I don't think voter names should be revealed. They aren't revealed in any other voting and shouldn't be with this either. I should be sending you my votes on thursday or friday.
